One of Toronto’s most beloved and unique downtown neighbourhoods, the Annex is a vibrant, eclectic and youthful area. You’ll find everything from wallet-friendly sushi and pizza joints to second-hand bookstores to bohemian cafés.
The Annex is a great neighbourhood for those who appreciate architecture and detail: its tree-lined residential streets are filled with Victorian, Queen Anne, Edwardian, and Richardsonian Romanesque houses and mansions, all built between 1880 and the early 1900s. Between the 1950s and ’60s, mid- and high-rise apartment buildings were built to meet the needs of the diverse community—their exterior facades are decorated with plum and pink Credit River sandstone, red brick and terracotta clay tiles. The detail in the Annex’s housing is among the finest and most varied in the city, with pyramidal roofs, turrets, grand archways and wooden spindled porches.
The Annex is very accessible by subway, via St. George and Spadina Stations, and by streetcar, via Bathurst and Spadina.
