Cabbagetown, a beloved neighbourhood in Toronto, is celebrated for its diverse community and strong sense of unity. Residents from various backgrounds share a deep pride in their neighbourhood, which is palpably felt and visibly expressed.
This communal spirit reaches its peak in September during the Cabbagetown Fall Festival, a weekend-long celebration featuring a mini-marathon, historical walking tours, a parade, and a neighborhood-wide yard sale. These events not only foster community engagement but also showcase the rich cultural fabric of Cabbagetown.
The Cabbagetown neighbourhood was once described by the New York Times as “containing the largest collection of Victorian homes in North America”. Cabbagetown’s houses were built between 1860 and 1895. Most of these houses have been lovingly restored under the watchful eye of the Cabbagetown Preservation Association. The Association, comprised of local residents, plays a vital role in ensuring that all Cabbagetown renovations and new developments are in keeping with this historical neighbourhood.
The ‘Old Cabbagetown’ shopping district on Parliament Street features many one-of-a-kind shops and a vast array of restaurants. The Carlton Street shopping district is similar in tone to Parliament Street, but on a much smaller scale.
Cabbagetown is enriched with unique amenities that cater to a variety of interests. The area is well-known for its distinct shopping districts, particularly the ‘Old Cabbagetown’ on Parliament Street, which hosts a plethora of one-of-a-kind shops and a diverse range of restaurants. Carlton Street offers a similar ambiance but on a smaller scale. Besides shopping, Cabbagetown boasts the Riverdale Park, home to the Riverdale Farm, which is a recreation of a late 19th-century Victorian farm. This park is not only a green space with sports fields but also a cultural touchstone, providing free access to a rural experience in the heart of the city.
Additionally, the Cabbagetown Community Arts Centre and the Cabbagetown Youth Centre offer various programs in arts, sports, and crafts, complementing the neighbourhood’s rich array of recreational facilities.
